These Shining Lives is based on a true story and follows the lives of the Radium Girls. These women painted the faces of luminous watches and clocks in the 1920s and 30s, unknowingly becoming some of the early victims of radium poisoning. Set in Ottawa, IL, home of the Radium Dial Company, the play follows the journey of Catherine Donohue from her beginnings as a factory worker in 1922 through the litigation she pursued into the late 1930s.
The show opened at The Tank Theater in May 2013. An excerpt of the piece was presented for The Cultural Committee’s Health and Occupational Safety Seminar in September, 2013 at The New York Academy of Medicine.
