In Their Footsteps is an award-winning documentary theatre experience that uses the real words of five women—two military officers and three civilian volunteers—who served in the Vietnam War. Crafted entirely from oral histories, this immersive production brings their poignant, funny, and deeply moving stories to life.

Through inventive staging, soundscapes, and storytelling, the play transforms modular set pieces into helicopters, rooftops, bunkers, and beyond—transporting audiences into the heart of the action and memory.

Since premiering Off-Broadway in 2018, In Their Footsteps has toured internationally to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Italy, and Australia, and has been featured at major festivals and veteran conferences across the U.S. It was also adapted into a virtual production and an NPR radio special, which earned a 2025 Gracie Award for Excellence in Radio Programming.

In Their Footsteps embodies IVP's commitment to cultivating spaces where women's unheard voices resonate. These five women spoke their truths decades ago—now we ensure they're finally heard, understood, and acted upon.

A celebration of real women in a messy and complicated war.

In 2025–26, In Their Footsteps endeavors to tour New York City schools, bringing a unique blend of live theatre, oral history, and hands-on learning directly to students.

Based on the real-life accounts of five American women who served in the Vietnam War, this immersive performance helps students connect emotionally and intellectually with history. Each school visit includes:

  • A live performance of the play

  • An interactive talkback with the cast and creative team

  • Optional workshops on oral history, storytelling, and cultural memory

Students will step into history through:

  • The Vietnam War's continuing impact on women and families

  • How women's voices were marginalized in wartime narratives

  • The power of oral history to preserve lived experience

  • How documentary theatre transforms testimony into shared understanding

By stepping into these stories, students will experience history as something living, personal, and deeply relevant.
