It launched the careers of Orson Welles, Arthur Miller, and Elia Kazan. And it was run by a woman. In the 1930s.

Neither did our Composer. An under-employed creative reckoning with the perennial choice of making art or getting a “real job,” she finds herself reading about Hallie and the FTP at an old bookstore. She falls asleep and is thrust into Hallie’s 1938 Dies Committee Hearing. Except this time, Hallie and the FTP artists get their real day in court.

Accused of communist leanings, FTP director Hallie Flanagan has less than an hour to save American theatre (and prove to the Composer that art is, indeed, worth doing). Her strategy? Stage her own defense: complete with actors, props, and just enough chaos to prove why the arts matter.

But as the hearing spirals into arguments about censorship, legacy, and funding, Hallie struggles to balance politics and art, while the Composer grapples with the worth of art and the artist.
